Neoprene glue is commonly used as a contact adhesive, which means you apply a thin coat to both cut edges, let it become tacky, then press the edges together firmly. It is not like ordinary household glue. A thick wet layer usually makes a messy, weak joint that takes longer to cure and can leave a hard ridge inside the suit.

How to repair a small wetsuit tear using neoprene glue

First, decide whether the tear suits a home repair. A short, clean cut in a smooth panel is the easiest job, especially if it is under about 2 inches, or 5 cm, and no neoprene is missing. Size matters. A tear that crosses a taped seam, runs through a knee pad, reaches a zipper, or has ragged, crumbling edges may need a professional repair or a patch rather than glue alone.

Turn the suit inside out and inspect both sides of the damage. Find the full length of the split. Wetsuit tears often look smaller on the outer nylon lining, while the foam neoprene underneath has separated farther along the cut. Gently pull the area open with clean fingers. Do not stretch it hard.

Gather the right materials

You need neoprene cement or a glue specifically labeled for wetsuit neoprene, plus isopropyl alcohol, lint-free cloths, a small disposable brush or applicator, and a flat work surface. Simple tools help. Nitrile gloves are useful because black neoprene glue is difficult to remove from skin, clothing, and carpet.

A few heavy books, binder clips with cardboard pads, or weights can hold the repair while it sets, although excessive pressure can squeeze out too much adhesive. Use wax paper beneath the suit if you are working on a table. Glue can transfer. Check the adhesive label for its recommended ventilation, drying time, and cure period before you begin.

Do not use super glue, hot glue, general craft glue, or a rigid epoxy for this job. Those products may initially hold a cut closed, but neoprene flexes every time you kick, squat, or pull the suit over your shoulders. Flexibility is the point. A repair adhesive made for neoprene should move with the material better than a hard household bond.

Prepare the tear before gluing

Let the wetsuit dry completely before repair. This is essential. Salt, sand, sunscreen, body oil, and damp fabric can interfere with adhesion, particularly around cuffs, neck seals, and ankles where residue tends to collect. Rinse the suit in fresh water first if it was recently used in the sea or a chlorinated pool.

Once dry, wipe only the exposed neoprene edges with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Keep it controlled. You are removing surface contamination, not soaking the suit or scrubbing away its lining. Give the cleaned area several minutes to air dry fully before opening the glue.

Dry-fit the tear next. Bring the two neoprene edges together and check that they line up naturally without overlap, buckling, or a visible open channel. The edges should kiss. If one side has stretched, ease it back into position rather than pulling the other side to match, since a distorted repair can pucker and become a stress point.

  1. Lay the tear open. Place the suit so both raw neoprene edges are accessible and the lining does not fold into the adhesive.
  2. Apply a thin first coat. Brush neoprene glue onto both exposed edges. Cover the cut evenly, but do not flood the surrounding fabric.
  3. Wait for tack. Follow the product instructions. Many contact cements need a short drying period until the glue looks dull and feels tacky rather than wet.
  4. Add a second thin coat if directed. Some neoprene cements bond better with two light coats, especially on porous or older foam.
  5. Join the edges once. Start at one end, position the cut carefully, and press the edges together without stretching the panel.
  6. Hold the bond. Use steady finger pressure for roughly a minute, then support the area flat while the adhesive sets.

Positioning is the fussy part. Contact adhesive can grab quickly, so do not press the whole tear together until the first inch is correctly positioned. Work slowly. If you misalign it badly, forcing the pieces apart can damage the foam and leave glue residue that must be cleaned before another attempt.

Let the glue cure properly

A bonded tear may feel secure after a short set time, but that does not mean it is ready for a dive. Give it time. Follow the cure window printed on your adhesive, which is often overnight or longer depending on the product, temperature, humidity, and thickness of the glue coat. Prices and instructions vary by region, so verify the manufacturer guidance for the exact tube you bought.

Keep the suit flat in a well-ventilated place while it cures. Avoid direct sun, a radiator, or a hot car. Excess heat can affect neoprene and may cause a repair to cure unevenly. Also keep the fresh bond away from pets, dust, and anything that could stick to the adhesive edge.

After full cure, gently flex the repaired panel between your hands. Bend it. The seam should stay closed without a sharp crack, peeling edge, or gummy glue transfer. Inspect the outer lining too, because a clean inner bond can still leave a snag-prone cut in the fabric face.

When a patch is the better fix

Glue alone closes a clean split, but it cannot replace missing neoprene. If the tear has a hole, a triangular flap, or damaged foam that no longer meets edge to edge, use a neoprene patch designed for wetsuit repair. Cut the patch with rounded corners. Square corners tend to lift sooner when the suit flexes.

For a small puncture with intact foam around it, a flexible urethane-style repair adhesive may also be suitable if its label specifically permits neoprene use. Read the label closely. These products often cure into a thicker surface layer than neoprene cement, which can be useful on an abrasion but may feel less supple on a high-stretch shoulder or behind the knee.

Large tears deserve a different plan. If the damage is longer than about 2 inches, runs along a seam, or is in a heavily loaded area such as the crotch, knee, shoulder, or zipper base, a repair shop may reinforce it with stitching and seam tape after gluing. That work is more durable when done well. Home glue is not a substitute for structural repair.

Test the repair before diving

Put the suit on carefully after the adhesive has fully cured, ideally first at home rather than while rushing at a dive site. Move through a squat, reach overhead, and rotate your shoulders if the repair is near those areas. Keep it gentle. You are checking whether the repair opens under normal suit stretch.

For a simple water check, wet the repaired area in a shower or shallow water and look for separation at the seam. A little water passing through wetsuit material is normal. A visibly opening cut is not. If the bond lifts, let the suit dry, remove loose adhesive as directed by the product maker, and redo the repair with cleaner, thinner coats.

Do not rely on a fresh or questionable repair for a cold-water dive where lost insulation could leave you uncomfortable or unable to complete the dive plan safely. Choose conditions with a margin. Discuss exposure protection and any gear concern with a certified instructor or local dive professional, especially when conditions are cold, current is present, or the dive has limited exit options.

To prevent the next tear, avoid pulling hard on dry neoprene, keep fingernails away from the inner lining, and use a little water or suit lubricant approved by the manufacturer when donning a tight suit. Store the wetsuit out of direct sunlight and away from sharp hooks. Small habits help. A clean, fully cured neoprene-glue repair can last well, but inspect it before each trip and repair new lifting edges early.
